TENNIS TEAM

League Match Levels (Who is Eligible for League Matches?)

Varsity Level
This player hits with topspin. The serve should have some spin on it (or at least have a goal other than “get it in”). The player should only be missing a second serve every once in a while and should have either played JV singles last year, played exhibition varsity doubles last year, or if younger, played in tournaments against varsity players.

Junior Varsity Level
This player should know the rules of tennis with no support from a coach. They should be able to make nearly all of their second serves and have something on their first serve. They may have an inconsistent topspin forehand or a consistent flat forehand. The player should be able to run and get to a ball within their reach.

Advanced Beginner
This player does not hit with any spin on purpose. The serve is loopy and the goal is to get it in. The player should know scoring without coaches help, but maybe does not know how to do a tiebreak, or more specific rules.

Beginner (Should only be brought with confirmation with other team)
This player probably needs minor support from a coach. The player’s only goal is to try to get the ball in. This player is likely young, possibly low middle school or younger. This might be one of the players first matches, ever.  This player will only attend league matches if the opponents have athletes at the same level.
